6 ESTRATEGIAS PARA COMBATIR EL ESTRÉS

                 

El ritmo de vida que llevamos está provocando que cada vez conozcamos desde más jóvenes lo que supone vivir con estrés. La cantidad de exámenes, deberes, actividades extraescolares y la presión de tener que ser los mejores en todo están causando que incluso los niños convivan con el estrés. Esto no mejora con el paso de los años, llega la Universidad y continúan los exámenes y proyectos y la presión de tener un buen currículum para optar a un buen trabajo en el que seguiremos teniendo que convivir con el estrés.

No siempre es posible controlar las causas del estrés, pero sí podemos controlar la manera de enfrentarnos a ello.

Empecemos por entender bien lo que es el estrés. La Real Academia Española define el estrés como: “tensión provocada por situaciones agobiantes que originan reacciones psicosomáticas o trastornos psicológicos a veces graves”.

Hans Selye observó lo que denominó Síndrome de Adaptación General (GAS) durante el cual la respuesta fisiológica al estrés progresa a través de tres etapas:

1.- El cuerpo es alertado y responde con una reacción de alarma.

2.- Se desencadena la actividad autonómica y el cuerpo se prepara para hacer frente a la tensión (etapa de la resistencia).

3.- Si el estrés continúa más allá de la capacidad del cuerpo para responder, el sistema se daña y puede colapsar (etapa del agotamiento).

Si llegamos a la etapa de agotamiento nuestro cuerpo está “perdiendo la batalla” contra el estrés. Son situaciones en las que el estrés es muy intenso y se prolonga demasiado en el tiempo. 

                                           

Los síntomas de que el estrés sobrepasa nuestra capacidad para enfrentarnos a él pueden ser psicológicos, pero también físicos.

La Asociación Americana de Psicología clasifica los diferentes síntomas que puede provocar el estrés en función de los diferentes tipos de estrés:

1. ESTRÉS AGUDO: es el más común, provocado por situaciones cotidianas (un suspenso, un plazo de entrega…). En pequeñas dosis puede ser hasta estimulante pero cuando es demasiado resulta agotador. Al ser a corto plazo no tiene consecuencias importantes y sus síntomas son fácilmente reconocibles:

  • Irritabilidad, ansiedad y depresión
  • Problemas musculares que provocan dolores de cabeza, de espalda y de mandíbula, y tensiones musculares que pueden provocar desgarros musculares y problemas en tendones y ligamentos.
  • Problemas estomacales e intestinales: acidez, flatulencia, diarrea, estreñimiento y síndrome del intestino irritable.
  • Sobreexcitación pasajera: elevación de la presión sanguínea, ritmo cardíaco acelerado, sudoración de las palmas de las manos, palpitaciones, mareos, migrañas, manos o pies fríos, dificultad para respirar y dolor en el pecho.

2. ESTRÉS CRÓNICO: es ese tipo de estrés que está presente continuamente y dura incluso años. Este tipo de estrés puede llevar a la persona a situaciones extremas, crisis nerviosas, violencia, apoplejía, ataques al corazón e incluso al desarrollo de un cáncer.

¿Qué podemos hacer para actuar contra el estrés?

                                           

El primer paso es identificar y reconocer la fuente de estrés y valorar los riesgos. El estrés agudo es fácilmente reconocible y muy poco perjudicial ya que, aunque no podamos evitarlo, sí podemos prepararnos para afrontarlo lo mejor posible. Algunas estrategias para combatir este estrés son:

  • BEBER AGUA: debemos beber unos 2 litros de agua al día para mantener el cuerpo bien hidratado. Las situaciones estresantes provocan que perdamos líquidos a mayor velocidad, por lo que necesitaremos ser más conscientes de la importancia de permanecer bien hidratados y beber antes de notar ya la sed. Además, si no bebemos lo suficiente la musculatura tiende a contraerse, contribuyendo a la tensión muscular.
  • MEDITACIÓN Y EJERCICIOS DE RESPIRACIÓN: la meditación reduce la ansiedad y la depresión. Meditar unos 20 minutos al día ayuda a reducir la percepción de dolor y a aumentar la sensación de bienestar. Los ejercicios de respiración permiten aumentar la oxigenación de nuestras células, contribuyendo a eliminar el estado de ansiedad.
  • EJERCICIO FÍSICO: el ejercicio ayuda a combatir el estrés de diferentes maneras. Como explica la Asociación Americana de Psicología, las personas físicamente activas tienen menos niveles de depresión y ansiedad que las sedentarias. El ejercicio genera un aumento de la norepinefrina, que puede ayudar al cerebro a luchar más eficazmente contra el estrés; además, aumenta la capacidad del cuerpo de responder ante el estrés. La actividad física hace que los sistemas fisiológicos corporales involucrados en la respuesta al estrés se comuniquen mucho más de lo habitual, mejorando su capacidad de respuesta. Visto de otra manera, cuanto más sedentarios somos menos eficiente es nuestro cuerpo para responder al estrés.
  • DESCANSO ADECUADO: mientras dormimos, nuestro cerebro aprovecha para organizar eficientemente la información recibida y sus respuestas y para recobrar la energía utilizada. Los estados prolongados de estrés exigen niveles altos de energía de nuestro cuerpo y el sueño es el momento de recuperarlos, si no descansamos bien esos niveles no se recuperan y cada vez se van agotando más.
  • TIEMPO LIBRE: como en el caso de la meditación, tomarse un tiempo para desconectar de la fuente del estrés y permitir que nuestro organismo descanse y se recupere es imprescindible. Recientemente EL País publicaba los resultados de un estudio en el que se afirma que con sólo cinco días de vacaciones se disminuye la angustia que provoca el estrés, se aumenta la vitalidad, se mejora el sistema inmunológico, se reduce la inflamación y se ayuda a contener el envejecimiento.
  • QUIROPRÁCTICA: La Quiropráctica trabaja optimizando la función del sistema nervioso y, por lo tanto, de nuestro cuerpo. Al fomentar que el cuerpo funcione correctamente permite que esté mejor preparado para enfrentarse a situaciones estresantes. Además, los ajustes quiroprácticos mejoran la postura, permitiendo que la musculatura se relaje y que respiremos mejor.

The nowadays pace of life is making us to know how is living with stress since young ages. The number of tests, homework, after-school activities and the pressure of having to be the best in all the circumstances, are causing that even the children are suffering from it. This situation does not improve over the years; during the university studies, tests and projects continue and we get extra pressure for achieving a good curriculum that could allow us to apply for a good job, in which we will probably have to deal with stress.

We cannot always control the stress causes, but we can manage the way we confront it.

Let’s start by understanding clearly what stress is. The Spanish Royal Academy of Language defines stress as: “the tension generated by overwhelming situations which origin psychosomatic reactions or psychological disorders, sometimes serious”.

Hans Selye observed what he called General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS). During the same, physiological answer to the stress advances through 3 different stages:

1.- The body is alerted and it answers with an alarm reaction.

2.- The autonomic response is triggered and the body prepares to confront the tension (resistance stage).

3.- If stress continues beyond the body capacity to face it, the system will be damaged and could collapse (exhaustion stage).

If we reach to the exhaustion stage, our body is “losing the battle” against stress. These are situations in which stress is very intense and long-lasting.

                                           

The symptoms caused when stress exceeds our capacity to confront it may be psychological, but also physical.

The American Psychological Association (APA) classifies the different symptoms that stress may cause according to the several types of the same:

1.- ACUTE STRESS:  it is the most common kind, and is originated by daily situations (a fail, a due date…). May be stimulating in small doses, but when is excessive it may become exhausting. Happening during short periods of time does not have important implications and its symptoms are easily recognizable:

  • Irritability, anxiety and depression.
  • Muscle dysfunctions provoking headaches, back and mandibular pains; and muscular strains that may cause muscle tears and problems over ligaments and tendons.
  • Stomach and intestinal problems: acidity, flatulence, diarrhea, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Temporary over-excitation: increased blood pressure, accelerated heartbeat, clammy hands, palpitations, dizziness, migraines, cold hands or feet, shortness of breath and chest pain.

2.- CHRONIC STRESS: is the kind of stress which is continuously present, and it may persist even during years. This stress may lead the person to extreme situations:  nervous breakdowns, violence outbursts, strokes, heart-attacks and as an extreme outcome, to development of cancer.

What can we do for facing stress? 

                                           

Firstly, it is important to identify and recognize the source of stress, and to evaluate the risks. Acute stress is easily distinguishable and very little damaging, and although we cannot avoid it, we can prepare us to confront it the best we can. Some ways to combat it are:

  • DRINK WATER: we should drink around 2 litres of water per day to maintain our body well hydrated. Stressing situations provoke us to lose liquids faster, so we will need to be more aware about the importance of keeping ourselves hydrated, and drinking before feeling thirsty. In addition, if we do not drink enough water the muscles tend to contract, contributing to general muscle strains.
  • MEDITATION AND BREATHE EXERCISES: meditation minimizes anxiety and depression. Meditating around 20 minutes per day helps us to reduce pain perception and increases wellness feeling. Breathe exercises allow us to increase oxygen in our cells, helping to eliminate the anxiety state.
  • EXERCISE: exercise helps to confront stress in different ways. As the American Psychological Association explains, people being physically active have lower levels of depression and anxiety than sedentary people.  Exercise generates an increase of norepinephrine which can help the brain to combat stress more effectively; furthermore, it increases the body capacity to response to it. Physical activity makes the physiological systems involved in the confrontation to stress to communicate more than usual, improving their response ability. Seen in another way, the more sedentary we are, the lower efficiency our body has while reacting to stress. 
  • PROPER REST: Meanwhile we are sleeping, our brain organizes efficiently both the information received and the answers to such info, and regains the energy utilized. Prolonged states of stress require high levels of energy from our body, and during sleep is the moment to recover them. If we do not rest enough, these levels cannot recover and get depleted on and on.
  • FREE TIME: same situation as meditation. It is important to take a break to disconnect from the stress source, and allow our body rest and recover. Recently, EL País published the results of a survey in which it affirms that simply with 5 vacation days, anguish provoked by stress is diminished, vitality is increased, immunologic system improves, decreases inflammation and helps to contain ageing.
  • CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic works optimizing the Nervous System function and consequently, the general function of it. Promoting such functions correctly, allow to our body to be more prepared against stress situations. In addition, Chiropractic adjustments improve body position, allowing the muscles relaxation and improving breathing.
